I came across a (brief) article in Dwell about this guy that documents these paths in the Netherlands. I remember talking about these in Architecture School (at one time I actually thought I had the smarts for this degree). They are the natural paths that people make. A great example of these is on a college campus when it snows a bunch. Before the plows plow the side walks people start making patterns in the snow. The easiest or most natural way to get somewhere reveals itself. Such an interesting idea.

Well all of these years later I come across this article of a guy archiving them. It's real hard to read (meaning impossible) because it's in dutch, but you can see a few more of these images here.

I love it because to me it's so surprising - the thought of someone who has spent their life telling people what to do and what's right all of a sudden wants to start learning from them instead.

I finally got to Kiosk - a little shop in a Soho that's hid up in a second floor shop accessed through this sketchy little door with graffiti all over it. You would never guess what was up there if you didn't know about it, but I've admired this little shop online for a few years now.
They have a rotating inventory of oddities from around the world. Here is one of the treasures I made out with:

It's a lunch pail from India with three separate compartments for goodies. They even come with little plates inside to eat on. It's perfect for Tom and I because we pack lunches EVERY morning and I think I'll be motivated to pack one when I get to do it in this pretty little thing.

Could I ask for a better day home? Never. I am back from the BIG city and so so glad to be in my beautiful rainy mountain home. Morning started with hugs and kisses from an early morning biker and ended with a bowl of oatmeal and hazelnuts from my perch on our stool while watching him get ready for work. The afternoon is looking like a knit socks, tea, working afternoon with butter nut squash roasting in the oven. It's a good day to be home.

Fashion week always gets me into such a flurry of excited, but oh so overwhelmed. So many beautiful things and ideas to see at once. This year I have a solid cast of blogs I have been following that have given diverse, yet edited view of some of the mayhem. To list just a few:

Sartorialist - Great one because there's not too much, just little hits of it. He also does an epic job of covering mens shows as well.

New York Times T Magazine Blog - They do a hyper amount of posts a day, yet there is such a wide variety of subjects that it's always interesting.

Man Repeller - She's a new one for me this year, but I had an instant crush. She only posts on what she is interested in, but it's fun to see what's catching this kooky girls eye.

I'm not much of a shower girl. Well, let me explain, I love planning and executing a good party, don't get me wrong, but when it's for me it's a different story. Kind of feel weird having people do these sorts of things for me - why? I'm not quite sure, but this was the absolute best shower possible. My favorite part? Sitting in the grass getting the details from the girls.

National Portrait Gallery

I loved the portrait gallery (the only museum we ended up stepping foot in while in DC this past trip). I love the tradition of sitting for a portrait, it's so old fashioned and bizarre at the same time. There were so many incredible people highlighted there and I really loved how the informational plaques were about the people IN the portraits, not the artists themselves. So many interesting people out there.

This granny is the coolest, my grandma would never pose for a picture like this. She says no one over 75 should ever have their picture taken. I completely disagree, but I guess you should ask me again when I'm 75.

After so many "stuffy" and old fashioned portraits I was drawn to this beauty like a magnet. It's a portrait done by Edgar Degas - course it is. I love the action in it, even though she is sitting in a chair.

What a stud.

I love that this is a presidential bust. He looks way too wild to be a president. First "western" president.

The colors in this really caught my eye. I also liked that it was a formal portrait of a black man during a time that few were treated very formally.

This piece was well placed on a dark blue wall. The yellow stood out so beautifully.

This is such a feminine portrait to me. Done by John Singer Sargent, one of my all time favorite painters. Especially his portraits.

I would love this set of images on the walls of my house some day.

I loved the sketchiness of this piece - it adds so much focus to the subject in my mind.

I adore the precision in the top of this piece mixed with the casual undone bottom.

Look closely, this is one of my favorites

This bold guy takes photos of people and posts them at larger than life proportions to make statements.
Putting up huge goofy images of Palestinians on the side of the border and huge funny images of on the Palestinian side of the border.
Putting up huge images of women in countries that women are supposed to stay covered and stay inside.

Beautiful ideas and beautiful work.
He's worth listening to here.

I came upon a neighborhood while in Seattle that I felt like I could have spent the whole day. It's a very industrial underground feel and there are a bunch of vintage and antique shops showing up. It's called George Town. I went there because I had read about Kirk Albert's shop on remodelista. It was so worth it. I even had a chance to talk shop with one of the buyers there. Who knows, it could have even been Kirk Albert himself?

Next door is the feminine version of the down town seattle antique shop called Susan Wheeler Home. Fell in love with this place too.

I've posted about this web site before. I love everything this girl does. It's mostly an online shop, but while I'm up here in Seattle I decided to go see the shop in the flesh. My heart hurts looking at this place. I would seriously buy everything if I could, but I can't afford to buy one thing. The lady was so patient to let me walk through the whole store and look at every last piece.
